It works by slowing down the movement of the gut and increasing the amount of water absorbed by the intestines. The recommended dosage is 2-4 mg every 4-6 hours as needed, not to exceed 16 mg in 24 hours. Common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, and headache. Use with caution in patients with liver disease, kidney disease, or bowel obstruction.
